A
 Work of HeartSan Jose, California

This workshop will provide a peaceful space to create your vision board for the year. We will explore the role of vision boards in goal setting and discuss how journaling can support you in the process! I will guide you through a series of steps that I have learned over years of creating vision boards of my own.  You will be given time to select images and create a vision board of your own.

I will also give you the opportunity to practice a valuable journaling process to help you capture any inspired ideas that might lead you to your goal. I call this process "Idea catching" and I will share with you the process of capturing your inspired actions in an idea journal.  This journal is unique in that it holds every wild idea, clue, phone number, map, and quote that will lead you to your goal. These journals have been extremely powerful in capturing inspired actions that result from focusing on my vision boards and has lead me to solutions and surprising results.

With your Vision Board and Idea Catcher, you will have everything you need to creative fabulous year!

    Words of Wisdom: Boundaries

“When we fail to set boundaries and
    hold people accountable,
    we feel used and mistreated.
This is why we sometimes attack who they are,
    which is far more hurtful
than addressing a behavior or a choice.”

    Weekly Art Journal - May 18 - 24

This week was all about SHINING! I have great opportunities to shine at work and with my art and I need to take advantage of those opportunities as they come. I have so many passions that I am inspired to express and I'm so grateful that I have lots of ways to express them.

I've been waking up early each morning to create in my journal.
For the past few weeks I've been waking up early in the morning to sit in my studio and journal until the sun comes up.

    It's my Sadhana

It's is making all the difference in the world as to how my day unfolds.
Each week is an amazing adventure.

This week I had a few medical appointments that went really well because I made some conscious decisions earlier in the year.  I didn't like going to my old dentist so I took steps to find a new one this year, it was the best decision ever!

When things don't work for me I usually try to work it out through communication...asking for what I want, negotiate something new, bringing awareness to something to bring about change.

But sometimes even with all that, things don't change
and it's time to move on.

But to tell you the truth...
I don't like to move on
I like to keep at something until it changes
but that leaves me soooo frustrated.
    and frustration dulls my SHINE.

So this week I look on doing things that make me SHINE
and letting go of things I've been trying to fix or change...
    and move on.

    Weekly Art Journal - May 11 - 17

This week we spent the week prepping for the Juicy Soul Retreat. I had a lot of fun playing with all my art supplies. I pulled out things I don't usually use. It's really good to use all the supplies in my studio and stop "saving" them.  I pulled out my number stamps and a date stamper. I added phrases and words using my new Dina Wakely stamps from A Work of Heart and magazine cut outs and clear stickers. I even busted out my Gelli Plate to do some mono printing of the background. I sometimes forget how much fun playing with a variety of supplies can be in the creative process. New tools give a new perspective and spark new ideas.

I challenge you to try some new supplies...you already have in your stash. Try to put them to good use in your journal this week. If you have any favorite tools, please share. I'd love to know.

    Weekly Art Journal : April 27 - May 3

Living in my journal kept me completely centered during the week.
Lots of family interactions and emotions happening.
It was a joy to return every evening to my journal.
Sometimes I just added color and other times words.
I made shapes and followed with color.

When I look at this page I think of how much I LOVE my brothers.
They are geniuses and they are my inspiration.
In some ways I always see my brothers as the little boys
that ran around wrestling in the living room and riding BMX bikes
    down the sidewalk.

They are men now ...with rich lives and families.
It's a joy to experience the men they are and
to know that no matter where I go in life
    there are always two guys
that know me better than anyone
    on the planet!

    One Word Wednesday - Royal

For, after all, every one who wishes to gain true knowledge must climb the hill difficulty alone, and since there is no royal road to the summit, I must zigzag it in my own way. I slip back many times, I fall, I stand still, I run against the edge of hidden obstacles, I lose my temper and find it again and keep it better, I trudge on, I gain a little, I feel encouraged, I get more eager and climb higher and begin to see the widening horizon. Every struggle is a victory. One more effort and I reach the luminous cloud, the blue depths of the sky, the uplands of my desire.”

I chose " Royal" as our word for One Word Wednesday because I kept seeing it everywhere (or words related to it) when I was in New Orleans.  I had no clue how it would impact my week and today it hit me...there is no royal road to health and well being. It is a day to day, moment to moment set of choices that yield results and set backs along the way.  You just have to stay the course.

Today I start a 30 Day challenge to explore healthy eating. I've been taking better care of my health for the last two years after I got a huge wake up call when my parents experienced some health challenges. In working with my family to find solutions for my parents, I realized how little I know about my own body and health. I discovered family health histories that I had no idea about and suddenly I needed to monitor in my own health profile with a lot more rigger.

I had to stop relying on "experts" to tell me what I should do to take care of my body. I had to get interested in how the human body works. I had to work with my doctors to create a healthier body!

For the first time, I'm learning how my body reacts to specific foods and supplements.
The result is that I am experiencing more vitality than ever before. I'm sleeping better and I have more clarity in the day. My body clock wakes me up earlier.
Taking better care of myself has created  more quality time ...for my family and for my creativity.

What lessons have you learned on the winding road of life?

    This week's word is Communication.
Allow this word to inspire you in your journal.
    Have fun with hand lettering
Photograph the word or its meaning this week.
Post your discoveries on Instagram with

NAEA 2015: "Make it Work!" with Tim Gunn

I'm an a big project runway fan, so when I learned that we would hear Tim Gunn speak at the National Art Educators Association, I was over the moon with excitement.

We listened, on the edge of our seats, as he shared story after colorful story about his days as a student at the Corcoran School of Art and Design in Washington, DC  We laughed as he told more stories of how he transformed the Parsons School of Design  against resistance from faculty and students. He offered insights as to how his roll on Project Runway was never really meant to be and happened almost by accident.

I was inspired and uplifted by his words and his authentic approach to life:
    Among the many lessons learned...

    1) Do what you love -Through out Tim's discussion I could hear the love he has for art and design. I could hear his passion for teaching and guiding others to be fully expressed in their creativity. There was a deep passion and love there that was electric and beautiful!

    2) Trusting talented individuals - There were many times along his journey where he encountered great artists and designers who took an interest in him. They challenged him to go beyond his comfort zone and try new things. He was scared and they didn't let him off the hook. He would die or get over the fear but he was encouraged to move forward and deal with the result. I could see how that approach would build certainty and confidence over time...and allow for more risk taking.

    3)  Don't take yourself too seriously. It's not brain surgery. - He is incredibly funny. We laughed so hard we were crying.  He found humor in the happy parts AND the not so happy parts of his life. He didn't let things get to him (at least not for long). That was truly inspiring.

So I will take those lessons in to the weeks that follow.
and see what new pathways open for creative expression.

    Weekly Art Journal - March 22 - 28

My weekly journal page spread landed on an old page
where I was testing a Christmas stamp in December.

So this week will be about covering and working around the stamp
and adding relevant images for the week.

    Weekly Art Journal - March 15 -21

I returned to something I love...creating mini stories from old book pages. It's fun to pull a random page from an old book and piece together words to create a new story. I find that the story may not make sense at the time but as the week unfolds I discover their meaning.

My brother is doing such a great job of looking after my parents. This mini story reminded me of how much I appreciate what he's doing for our parents and the family. He is such a loving and generous spirit. Words can not express how much I truly love and appreciate him.

This week one of my dearest friends and her family will be moving to Southern California. Our friendship has grown over the years and I've made even more friends through her network of friends. We have grown from friends to a group of friends to family in only a few short years.

I met with a group from a seminar I took this year. The seminar is over but we had so much fun together we committed to meeting each month for dinner to catch up, show up, tell the truth and inspire each other. This month we met for Chinese food at a local restaurant.

"Self Expression is that thing that let's you know
    that people have experienced you.
It's not so much that "I did it my way".
It's that you've been experienced by other people.
You've touched them and they have touched you. "

    ~ Warner Erhard

Here is the starting point for my weekly journal this week.
I start with an existing page then add just enough color and texture to inspire me.
The butterfly wing was there already from an image transfer demonstration

Next I add the Month, Date and Days of the week.

I found "March" in W magazine table of contents.
(Magazines and old calendars are great places to find month and days)

I also add the dates and
let the inspiration, color and creativity flow
    during the week.

    Happy Journaling!
