Journal Topics: Remembering Brazil

When I was 7 years old my family moved to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. I learned to speak Portuguese by watching Sesame Street (called Vila Sesimo) and Flipper (dubbed in Portuguese). My experiences in Brazil show up alot in my journal. This week I remembered Vila Sesimo and the songs we used to sing and how I learned the language so quickly.  I remembered playing with neighborhood kids. I would help my parents with translations and I started to dream in Portugues. I've long since forgotten the language but I understand bits and pieces of words. I have a few phrases I can say and when I say them to native speakers they tell me my accent is pretty good. So part of what we learn, never really leaves us. Brazil was a life changing experience and there are many happy memories to share in my journal.

What have you learned early in life that has never left you?

Creative Intention 2012: Julie's Update

My Creative Intention for 2012
I will inspire others to expand their creativity! I would like to expand my reach to share my creative process with artists all over the world. My big goal is to be a featured artist in my favorite Somerset Studios magazines. I would also like to design a creative journaling line of products based on some of the tools I use in my journal projects."

When I set an intention its like things just start to line up. People show up with ideas and clues to support me on my path. Over the years I have learned to pay particular attention to repetitive patterns. One pattern I kept seeing was a piece of art work. I saw the same piece of art at Whole Foods, on products in clothing stores, on journals in book stores and today I saw the art work in my favorite art magazine. Today I discovered the name of the artist....Flora Bowley and her work is amazing.  Not only is her art work powerful but her creative process is pure bliss.

She creates in a way that is similar to my creative process but I have never been able to articulate it.  As I learned more and more about her process I felt like I had a soul sister out there.  I also felt a profound sense of calm and inspiration to move deeper into my work. I stayed up late into the night creating and woke up early this morning to continue to create. There are lots of ideas, subjects and styles bubbling up.  I feel like I'm on the verge of something to submit to share in my workshops, submit to Somerset Studios and maybe I'll be brave enough to traveling to England to take a class with Flora in Somerset England.

My intention is in motion and its a wonderful and exciting feeling.

Time to Organize the studio

|
Lined up all my Somerset Studios Magazines for Inspiration... then had a little virgo moment to organize them by color. It just makes me happy..

Studio Space: A Beautiful Mess

I'm inspired by artists who keep a neat studio. I have never been able to do it for more than a day or two. My studio usually gets messy when I'm not using it. If I don't create for a week or two my desk starts to become the catch all for everything. This just reminds me to create...create...create.

Creative Process in Action: Kelly Rae Roberts

There is magic in the creative process. Each artist has their own unique style of working. Here is Kelly Rae Roberts in her creative process. Notice how she creates and covers what she creates. This is the beauty of layers. All those textures exposed and covered provides something rich in the end and it allows for generous forgiveness throughout the process.

Project 52 in Action: March Calendar

I started creating my March calendar in my journal page in my Big Juicy Journal.  I'm enjoying putting a little snippet of life into each box...a word, image, a story or a memory. There's not much room so I have to narrow down the day into a word or two.  It keeps things simple and easy.

Big Juicy Journal

I'm living in the pages of my Big Juicy Journal. Here's one that I love. It has lots of great elements and materials. I love playing with images and texture in my journal. This is layers and layers of paints and inks. I work on several pages at once...then I find I gravitate towards one page and keep working until I feel it's done. This page is begging for some words but for now the images and colors make me really happy.

Creativity at Work: Light through the window

Creativity and beauty is always around us.  I noticed that I get so focused at work I don't even notice the beauty around me. So in January I started to journal about all the bits of joy and beauty that shows up in my work place.

In the afternoon there is one hallway that becomes a wash of bright sunlight and the blinds make a wonderful pattern of lines on the carpet   I captured the moment with my cell phone camera. (What did we do without cell phones and digital cameras?) It just reminds me of the beauty of simplicity.

Enjoying good food ...

I had a great dinner with my team at work in San Francisco. I have always heard great things about about the amazing food at Crustacean's restaurant, but nothing prepared me for the size of this crab. Crustacean's is famous for their garlic crab and noodles so I was excited to finally try it. I love seafood, I grew up eating Maryland Blue Crab in the summer as a kid. I have seen many crabs in my day but this is one big crab and it was delicious! (This crab looks like it might be praying....praying for mercy before I eat it!)

Big Juicy Journal Page: Birds of a Feather ...

I spent a week away from my BIG juicy journal on a business trip and I really missed working in the pages. I'm in love with these little birds. I cut 2 shapes from random journal and book pages.. one for the bird body, one for the wing and one for the beak.  I found the perfect page in my Big Juicy Journal for a background and went to town with paints, gesso and vintage stamps.

They where so much fun to create.
